What’s New from American English

Our February theme on the American English at State Facebook page is Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. American English LIVE Teacher Development Series 13 will have its next session on March 2nd. The fourth session, “Using Authentic Materials and Skills ” will take place at 8am and 1pm ET.” Throughout the entire series, we’ll be celebrating 60 years of English Teaching Forum with webinars presented by FORUM authors. Promotional graphics and discussion posts are included with this week’s materials.

The most recent issue of English Language Forum is now available on the American English website. The (Vol. 59, No. 4) issue features articles on the following topics, among others: strategies for using nonprofit commercials as content, assessing learners’ productive vocabulary knowledge, helping pre-service teachers observe classes more productively, practicing tense and aspect in a creative,  and a collaborative activity. The My Classroom article focuses on a teacher in Vermont (and Michigan) whose online work reaches learners around the world. Authors in this issue represent Germany, Uzbekistan, Japan, the Philippines, and the United States. Please spread the word about the release of this issue!

The American English YouTube channel now has over 106,000 subscribers and 808 videos! Our featured video is about Communicative Classroom Activities. Do you want to create a communicative classroom? Check out this video to learn about activities you can use to give students opportunities for interaction and practice.

Check out our latest set of materials and project, Sing Out Loud Word Play. Word Play is an exciting program between American English, American Music Abroad, and American Voices to bring music and lyrics into the English language classroom around the world. These materials include .mp3’s of original music by American Music Abroad musicians, lesson plans, activities, and a video series all of which are downloadable to use in the classroom. Be sure to check out these great resources on the American English Website.

The Office of English Language Programs will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of English Teaching Forum (FORUM) in 2022. We have officially launched the celebration with a series of webinars, all presented by past authors of FORUM, regular social media posts highlighting and celebrating the 60th Anniversary, and much more. The social media toolkit can be found in SharePoint and Box. Please use to plan activities you may want to do to celebrate FORUM in 2022 and to amplify this celebration.

American English Live: Teacher Development Series 13 begins on January 19, 2022! Throughout the entire series, we’ll be celebrating 60 years of English Teaching Forum with webinars presented by ETF authors, including RELOs Lottie Baker and Kevin McCaughey!

Series 13 events take place every other Wednesday from January 19th through March 30th at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Eastern Time from Washington, DC. To join these sessions, go to the @AmericanEnglishforEducators Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AmericanEnglishforEducators) at those times on the event dates. English for Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) (Self-Paced) – OPEN FOR ENROLLMENT – This course is designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in improving their English skills in the sciences. In this course, you will explore some of the most innovative areas of scientific study while expanding your vocabulary and the language skills needed to share scientific information within your community. In Module 1, you will learn how to preview texts and practice some of the language used to make comparisons when talking about global warming and climate change. In Module 2, you will examine the chemistry of climate change and the language of cause and effect. In Module 3, you will learn about some of the impacts of Climate Change and the language used to describe these effects. In Module 4, you will learn reading strategies that can help you explore the science behind some new energy systems. In Module 5, you will investigate practical advances in nanotechnology that help slow down climate change, while developing your own research skills in English.
